He also called El Supersonico. Having formed an increasingly effective partnership with Madrid's inside left, Jose Hector Rial, Gento helped Real sweep all before them in winning the inaugural European Cup, and subsequently made goalscoring contributions in both of the next two finals in 1957 and 1958. He and his team-mates dominated the competition in the early years and to this day Gento holds the unique record of winning six European Cup medals.

At the peak of his career, Gento has choose as a captain for both club and country, and tasted Spanish Championship success on no fewer than twelve occasions. He eventually scored 256 goals in 800 games for Real Madrid and was capped 43 times by Spain.
