Mainstay player for Celtic and Scotland during the 1970's and early 1980's. Playing for Scotland in 62 time, he was unfortunately well known for his regular injury setbacks.
A native of Glasgow, McGrain signed for reigning European champions Celtic in 1967. Alongside other young players Kenny Dalglish, Lou Macari and David Hay he made his debut for the club three years later, helping the Buoys to a League Championship and Scottish Cup double. A remarkably swift recovery from a fractured skull suffered in a game against Falkirk in 1972 enabled McGrain to earn his first international cap a year before taking part in Scotland's 1974 World Cup campaign. The Scots returned home undefeated. McGrain returned home only to be diagnosed a diabetic. Typically, he quickly bounced back only to sustain an ankle injury that kept him out of Scotland's 1978 World Cup squad and out of the international fray for a total of three seasons. He produced yet another fighting comeback in order to lead out the Scots during the 1982 World Cup finals.
After appearing in over 600 games with the Celtic, McGrain moved away from Parkhead to join Hamilton Academicals. He left the club having won seven Scottish League Championships, five Scottish Cups and two League Cups.
