Butragueno was a mainstay on attacking style of play with Real Madrid and Spain during the 1980's. He was well capable of turning half chances into goals, mixing close skills with a razor sharp eye for finding the back of the net. He made his final international showing in 1992, played 69 matches, having scored 26 goals.

Nicknamed 'The Vulture', Butragueno was initially regarded by Real Madrid's coaches as an average prospect and was shipped off to Castilla, a feeder club for the Madrid giants. He soon proved his class and quickly moved back to become the focal point of Real's attack throughout their domination of Spanish football, especially in the late eighties. Butragueno was twice voted Europe's finest young player as he spearheaded Madrid's drive to UEFA Cup success over Videoton in the 1985 final and Cologne a year later, before a run of five consecutive League championships from 1986 to 1990 and a Spanish Cup triumph in 1989 cemented his reputation as his country's leading frontman. Playing for Spain, Butragueno made his debut against Wales in 1984, but really shot to fame during the 1986 World Cup finals when he finished second to Gary Lineker in the tournament goalscoring charts. His amazing four goals blitz in Spain's 5-0 rout of highly rated Denmark helped the side into the quarter-finals where they unluckily went out to Belgium on penalties.

Muller, nicknamed The Bomber, became the first German player to receive the European Footbler of the Year Award after scoring ten goals in the 1970 World Cup Finals. Two years later he netted twice in Germany's 3-0 European Championship Final victory over the USSR. His astounding strike rate continued throughout the following years as Bayern swept aside all opposition to win the European Cup on three consecutive occasions in the mid-seventies. His two goals in the 1974 Final and one a year later were typical of a man who continually rose to the big occasion. Never was there a better example of this than in the 1974 World Cup Final when Muller delighted the home fans with the winner against a Holland team containing stars such as Cruyff, Neeskens and Rep. Latching onto a pass from Bonhoff, he showed lightning reactions to hook the ball into the net for what proved to be his final and most important International goal.

GRZEGORZ LATO, The Fortune Carry

Lato was a most historical Poland football player, during his 104 apperances for Poland national football team, he has scored 46 goals. Lato made his name as an International star with an outstanding performance in the 1974 World Cup which helped his country to a surprise third place finish. He ended the tournament as top marksmen with seven goals and alongside teammates Gadocha and Kazmiercz Deyna, became known as one of the world's brightest talents.

He made his debut for Poland against Spain in 1971 before featuring in the team that won the gold medal at the Munich Olympics a year later. By 1973 he had done enough to establish himself as a regular in the senior national team, and in a career that was to go on until 1984, Lato's well documented predatory instincts were to reap a record total of forty six International goals.

He was however by no means an out and out striker. As his career wore on he tended to drop back into midfield where he continued to be equally effective. The distinctively balding Lato pulled the strings for the Polish team that qualified for the 1978 World Cup Finals and in the process, earned himself a move from his club side Stal Mielec to Lokeren of Belgium.

Four years later, despite his advancing years he was handed something of a surprise call up to the Polish squad that impressed on it's way to a 3-2 World Cup third place play-off victory over a multi-talented French side. During the finals Lato picked up his one hundredth cap in what was to be his last major International tournament. Two years later in 1984 he moved across the Alantic to end his playing career with Mexican side Atlante.

FRANCISCO GENTO, The Road Runner Show

At the peak of his career, Gento has choose as a captain for both club and country, and tasted Spanish Championship success on no fewer than twelve occasions. He eventually scored 256 goals in 800 games for Real Madrid and was capped 43 times by Spain.


DANNY MCGRAIN, Guarding Scotland from the Side

Mainstay player for Celtic and Scotland during the 1970's and early 1980's. Playing for Scotland in 62 time, he was unfortunately well known for his regular injury setbacks.
A native of Glasgow, McGrain signed for reigning European champions Celtic in 1967. Alongside other young players Kenny Dalglish, Lou Macari and David Hay he made his debut for the club three years later, helping the Buoys to a League Championship and Scottish Cup double. A remarkably swift recovery from a fractured skull suffered in a game against Falkirk in 1972 enabled McGrain to earn his first international cap a year before taking part in Scotland's 1974 World Cup campaign. The Scots returned home undefeated. McGrain returned home only to be diagnosed a diabetic. Typically, he quickly bounced back only to sustain an ankle injury that kept him out of Scotland's 1978 World Cup squad and out of the international fray for a total of three seasons. He produced yet another fighting comeback in order to lead out the Scots during the 1982 World Cup finals.

After appearing in over 600 games with the Celtic, McGrain moved away from Parkhead to join Hamilton Academicals. He left the club having won seven Scottish League Championships, five Scottish Cups and two League Cups.



BRYAN ROBSON, The Three Lions Captain Marvel

Robson signed schoolboy terms with West Bromwich Albion in 1971 where he had to undertake a body building course in order to cope with the rigours of the professional game. He eventually took over as captain of the club after a string of commanding performances, and in 1980 was taken to Man. Utd by old Hawthorns' boss Ron Atkinson. Over the next fourteen seasons he made over 600 appearances for the Old Trafford club guiding them to three FA Cups (1983,'85,'90), the European Cup Winners Cup in 1991, and the inaugural Premier league title of 1993. Surely, he was the most complete English midfielder of his generation.

Nicknamed 'Captain Marvel', Robson's value to the England team was no less significant. Under the management of Bobby Robson he proved an versatility, covering every inch of ground in his role as midfield general. He captained the side during both the 1986 and 1990 World Cup campaigns, although arguably his greatest moment came during the 1982 tournament when he scored against France after only 27 seconds - a World Cup record.

Robson finally left Man. Utd in 1994 to take over as manager at Middlesbrough. In his first season in charge he led them to the first division title, but in 1997 suffered setbacks on three fronts. Defeats in both the FA Cup Final and League Cup Final and an agonizing slump in league form resulted in relegation from the Premier Division.

In 1987, he took the team to their first ever League Championship and an Italian Cup before inspiring them to their first and only European triumph in 1989 (a UEFA Cup victory over Stuttgart) and then in 1990 to another League title.

Nordahl got his nickname “Pompiere” based on his career before transferd to AC Milan in 1949, he was worked as a fireman. Prior to that he bagged 77 goals in 58 games for Degerfors and 93 goals in 92 games for Norrkoping the club where he collected four consecutive league titles, and brought his country to the gold medal at the 1948 Olympic Games. His striking prowess was not dimmed in the notoriously tough Italian Serie A.
Indeed he successfully linked up with fellow Swedes Gunnar Gren and Nils Liedholm at Milan and later continued his terrific form at Roma. Nordahl finished as the league's top scorer no fewer than five times, scoring 225 times at the rate of almost one goal per game for the two clubs. He eventually returned home in 1957 to serve as player-manager of Karlstad.

Nordahl appeared in two World Cup campaigns, unfortunately he missed out on Sweden's 1958 World Cup Final date against Brazil. Only played 33 international appereances, amazingly he could scored 44 goals by that time, undoubt he became the greatest Swedish goalscorer of all time.
